Description

From total beginners, to those who want to sharpen their quilting skills, this is the perfect class for you! I guarantee that you will learn many tips and techniques that will improve your overall quilt making skillset and help advance your quilt making to the next level.  While you can use your sewing machine, this class can be successfully completed by hand and will expose you to many aspects of quilt making.

In this class you will create a six block “sampler” lap quilt and learn all of these skills in the process:

  • Color basics and fabric selection
  • Introduction to the tools used in quilt-making
  • Proper rotary cutting techniques
  • Fussy Cutting & Template Cutting
  • Piecing techniques
  • Half Square Triangles
  • Quarter Square Triangle
  • Matching points
  • Curved Piecing
  • Foundation – Paper Piecing
  • Machine appliqué
  • Y seams
  • Partial Seams
  • Complex Centers (8-pointed star)
  • Sashing and cornerstones
  • Borders
  • Binding (from creating it to attaching it to stitching it down!)

This course was originally taught online as six live Zoom sessions, but you’ll receive all of those recorded classes, patterns, and course materials so you can complete the course at your own pace!

Session 1:  Introduction (supplies, rotary cutting),  color/fabric choices and general questions

Session 2:  Basic Piecing  including – HST, QST and how to match those points

Session 3:  Paper piecing and Partial Seams

Session 4:  Appliqué  and curved piecing

Session 5:   Y Seams, Mitered Corners and Complex Centers

Session 6:  Sashing,  Standard Borders and Binding

Each video session you will have both a sewing homework assignment and a cutting / prep assignment for the next session.   But each assignment is focused on a single block so the time required should be manageable.  The goal here is mastering skills, not a lot of repetition to produce a ton of units. You might want to make a couple variations of a particular block to master the skills for that particular video session.

Session instructions and patterns will be organized and segmented so you can print them as you prepare for each session.   Once you purchase the class, and you familiarize your self with the materials,  I would love to have you call me to schedule up to five check-in sessions via Facetime or Zoom so I can check-in on your progress, answer questions and even coach you through any challenges you’re having!    After you’ve constructed the blocks from all the sessions,  I’ll even show you how to to join the six (or more) blocks into a quilt and how to finish it with professional level binding.

All BobKat Quilts classes include my no-fail guarantee:  I will be available to you for questions and support until your quilt top is done!  In addition to the five scheduled check-ins, I’m available via email, and phone calls to to answer questions, fix problems and help you finish your project!  My goal is to grow your skills and confidence, not just sell you a class!

The course includes seven videos to watch at your leisure, all PDF instructions, block patterns and finishing instructions, plus my personal support until you finish the course and your quilt top!

Click the link above to add the course to your cart.   When you complete your checkout you’ll receive a link on the screen to download a PDF document that is your key to accessing the course content.   This link will also appear on the receipt you’ll be emailed after you complete your transaction.  Download the document to our phone, computer or tablet and save it somewhere you can find it.   Don’t hesitate to call me if you have any problem!

Excellent Class – Excellent Learning

I just finished the quilting fundamentals class. I am an average sewer for crafts/boho bags and some clothes. Was a little concerned I would be in over my head with my busy schedule. I absolutely loved this class, easy to understand and well explained!  The pace gave me time to practice my blocks and move on. Kathy is excellent (and it shows) in her teaching and presentations and she organizes  them in an easy and understandable class sessions.

My confidence is much higher now and  I’m ready for future projects.  Thank you Kathy!

Fundamentally Wonderful!

The Fundamentals of Quilting was a wonderful class, lots of information and links to fully understand new techniques. I finished the class with three sample quilts and ready to tackle bigger projects. Kathy has a wealth of experience and willingly shares, answered questions and helped everyone be successful. Most classes went over in time.  Make sure you budget time to practice between sessions — She’ll give you instant feedback!

I would definitely take another course through zoom, as I still have so much to learn.

Fundamentals of Quiltmaking – A Must Class for Beginning Quilters

Five Stars for Fundamentals of Quiltmaking!

Kathy provided a clear outline for each week. We were provided with instructions on cutting out fabric to prepare samples of the blocks and techniques that were going to be demonstrated in the upcoming that class.  We were also were encouraged to message any problems we were having or questions. Her responses were always timely and offered suggestions. We all proudly displayed our finished blocks for that session. We also were provided with additional resources.
I have been quilting for a few years but still referred to myself as a beginner.   After this class I can walk through that door!
I can now do partial seams, flying geese, prairie points, a true 1/4 inch seam, and curves. Plus so much more.

I highly recommend this class.
