SUMMARY:BobKat's Autumn 2025 Shipshewana Retreat - Feeling Groovy!
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Indiana’s Amish country.   Shipshewana is great place for quilters!  There are several massive quilt and fabric shops within walking distance of our retreat space at the Farmstead Inn\, and there are more than a dozen more with in a 20 minute radius.  We keep the participant group to less than 30.   I’m now doing both a Spring and an Autumn retreat and we’ve sold out the Spring retreat last two years. \nAs usual we’ll focus on Quiltworx projects and this year I’ve chosen some great patterns with a wide range of options including Feeling Groovy\, Hocus Pocus\, and Summer Solstice.  You can do them straight\, expand them to queen size or even give them a swirl!  See the examples below.  Of course you’re welcome to purchase another Quiltworx pattern at a discount or bring one that you’re already working on. Mary T.Fun instructor who teaches to all levels of skillHi\,\nJust wanted to post a little note. I am very new to sewing and especially quilting. My friend\, who lives in Indiana\, asked me if I wanted to take a quilting class with her. So I did. Kathy was beyond fantastic. She is a true instructor who understands how not to overwhelm students who are trying to learn a new skill set. It was super fun\, relaxing and I learned a lot. There were some very experienced quilters in the class who also learned a lot. I’ve already decided that I’m going to Shipshewana again next year (2025)! Thanks for a fun week! Dana ARetreat\, Videos\, In-Person – Great ways to learn!I really like your hybrid teaching concept with great in-person instruction\, supplemented with videos shared before and available for review after the retreat.  I think that is more of the way the future will look.  Many traditional quilters like the in-person sessions\, and I understand that. But those of us with jobs and kids and other responsibilities cannot afford to be away for long periods of time.  While this was a table topper class\,  I did purchase a queen size pattern\, so it was worth going thru the class versus doing something from videos only. Gina VivianoYoder's Department Store - Shipshewana\, IN“My First Retreat! — What A Blast!”What a blast! The “Best Little Quilt Retreat in Texas” was my first retreat\, my first paper piecing project\, and a first-class teacher . Thank Kathy for making the Judy technique doable for me! Terri J.M. Best Little Quilt Retreat in Texas 2023I learned a LOT!I have special needs children and really needed a 2-day respite\, but the pace was faster than I expected\, so I didn’t get much rest!    The videos you shared ahead of the retreat were a life-saver!  However\, with that said\, I did enjoy my time at the retreat. I appreciate how you were able to attend to everyone in the place they were as we got going. You were thorough in your explanations\, which was great. And you shared some invaluable tips and tricks to surviving a “Judy project”.  Meredith the other instructor from Yoder’s Department Store was a strong\, stable persona in the room the entire time and that helped as well!   I enjoyed getting to know you and the ladies in the group\, which is rare for me as an extreme introvert!  Thank you for the experience! Gina VivianoYoder's Department Store - Shipshewana\, INHer first Paper Piecing Project – WOW!Kathy’s note:  This was Elaine’s first paper piecing project!  All I can say is WOW!!! Thanks Kathy!  Couldn’t have done it without you!  You are a great teacher.  I highly recommend her for your quilting projects. PS The Quilt is even more beautiful in person! Elaine Y.S.Can’t Recommend Kathy Enough!Take one of Kathy’s classes- live and/or zoom. You will be guided through the process with as much support as you need. I can’t recommend Kathy at BobKat quilts enough! She is wonderful! Wendy SBobKat’s Retreat – The Value is Phenomenal! Can’t say enough about how fun\, laid back\, and informational this retreat has been! I can’t truly say I’m “bummed” about missing her next one because I’m going to Quiltworx (!!!) in October\, but if it weren’t for that I’d be doing everything I could to be here. But that just means my seat is open for someone else!   This retreat WILL fill up!  If you have the time\, you should be here —  The value is phenomenal. Thank you Kathy for a fantastic week! Tabitha A.I Loved the Retreat!I joined Kathy at her BobKat Quilts Shipshewana Retreat where I worked on my 1st Quiltworx Quilt Carnival Flower. I loved the retreat and Kathy’s world of knowledge! If you get a chance\,  join Kathy at one of her future in-person or zoom classes or at an upcoming retreat Daphney CThank You for a Fantastic Week!Thank you so much for a fantastic week. This is my first time making a JN quilt and Kathy made the whole process understandable and enjoyable. She is an outstanding instructor and I will be taking future classes with her. Wendy SOutstanding Retreat!Your Shipshewana Retreat  was Outstanding!!! Had a great time with great people. And I will go home with my Carnival Flower in Tula colors 3/4 assembled. Couldn’t quite get that last slice in there but will finish at home. I learned so much this week Janet L.Great class with Kathy GrovesI really enjoyed our class in Shipshewana doing Zen Garden. I thought your teaching was right on. Loved all of your short cuts and tips so our projects would come out perfect. Even at home as I continue my project\, I can use your tricks. We really didn’t go thru the instruction book. I don’t know if that was a good thing or not. I certainly have had no problem following along now that I’m at home. Lastly\, I would like to know how you organize your instruction book(s). I know a lot of people use highlighters on certain instructions. How do you do it? Again thank you for a great class. I am looking forward to seeing you again in Shipshewana for future classes. Debra RYoders/Cotton CornerEnjoyable and relaxingI enjoy Kathy’s method of teaching. It’s relaxed and free form. I can progress at my pace. Kathy is always happy and open to suggestions. She had a terrific solution to a fabric problem. I didn’t need to recreate a section or buy more fabric! I wish the workshop was four days. I felt that I was just understanding the methods of construction plus making progress when it was over! I am looking forward to her return to Shipshewana. Marilouise HYoder Department Store and The Cotton CornerGreat Instructor\, I highly recommend her!Very nice\, patient and knowledgeable teacher. Easy to follow her instructions. Kathy has great tricks that she easily shared and made sure we understood before moving on. Highly recommend one of her classes. Debra RYoders and The Cotton CornerGreat group instructor…AND personal follow up!Kathy was very helpful during Qultworx University. She provided helpful tips and shortcuts\, written cue cards. I found her group instructions to be helpful and appreciated individual follow up after the demonstration. She was also quick answer individual questions and requests for help with problems. I enjoyed learning to know and work with Kathy. Sarah Buller FentonGreat instructor! Very easy to understand…Kathy is very patient and knowledgeable.  She teaches in a way that is very easy to understand no matter your level of experience Sandra Berg-WhileyAfter your class…I am having a ball!I can’t believe how smoothly my quilt is going together.  I’ve been sewing 2-3 hours a day! You know you’ll want to make it!  Or bring any pattern you wish to sew! \nWe are adding an extra day this year — so we’ll be retreating from Tuesday\, June 3 (start sewing at 10:00 AM) and we will sew until Sunday afternoon (4:00 PM).  THAT IS 6 FULL DAYS OF SEWING!!!   That week is also the week of the nearby Elkhart Quilt Show — so you can sneak away one day to take in the show if you wish!  It’s about a 20 minute drive.  Not to mention a visit to Yoder Department Store\, The Cotton Corner\, Lolly’s\,  Essenhaus Quilt Shop\, Caroline’s\, Zincks and more!  And don’t forget your stop at JoJo’s Pretzels or Ben’s Pretzels!  Yummy is the word of the day! \nAs always — I’ll start the instruction on Zoom in February — and you can join me then and get started or wait until the retreat to get going.  The full Zoom Series is included with your retreat registration!  A $300+ value! \nThe Zoom series is available independently as well.  You can choose RETREAT ONLY or ZOOM ONLY or you can purchase your pattern with your registration (I discount them with registration!) for either the retreat or the Zoom Series.  Since the pattern was released — Certified Shops have been offering KITS — which can include fabric only or fabric with pattern – make sure you don’t purchase 2 patterns!   I can also help you custom design your own colorway using Quiltster if you want your own unique quilt.  Or join me and learn how to use Quiltster to design your own! \nDeposit will be refundable through January 31st\, 2025 less a 4% processing (mostly what is withheld by the payment processor.)   Reserve your hotel rooms independently at The Farmstead Inn or plan to stay at the nearby campground or check out some of the nearby VRBO / B&B options.  There are other hotels a little less pricey you may want to check out.  You do NOT need to stay at the hotel to participate in the Retreat. \nI hope you’ll consider joining me.  With the Zoom support added — this is a GREAT value — 6 days of sewing and the full Zoom Series (and my support from start to finish regardless of your timeline). \n\n \n

SUMMARY:The Best Little Quilt Retreat in Texas!
DESCRIPTION:Join me in October in south-central Texas for a rural\, rustic Texas-style Quilt Retreat at the Texas Quilt Barn in LaGrange\, Texas.  Although the city name was changed to protect the guilty\, there was a Broadway musical and a 1982 film based on the infamous history of a certain poultry-related establishment that once existed in LaGrange — hence the name of this retreat.  The Texas Quilt Barn is located centrally between Houston\, San Antonio and Austin (approximately 1 hour from AUS – Austin Bergstrom International Airport – shuttle service is available\, let me know well ahead of the event). \nThe sewing room is spacious\, well lit with each quiltmaker having two 4’ wooden tables (L shaped!)\, design walls\, and comfy rolling office chairs!  While meals are provided — there is also a full kitchen so you can create your own snacks or meals (email me if you have dietary restrictions that need to be observed – we’ll discuss options).   Relaxing seating area for handwork or just visiting with each other.  WiFi is also readily available. \nPattern options:  Work on Carnival Flower – the newest Quiltworx Technique of the Month Quilt\, Arctic Star or Andromeda (and receive access to full Zoom series at no additional cost!)    Or bring your own pattern(s) to work on.   I’ll help you with any Quiltworx pattern – or any pattern for that matter if I can!   From Wedding Ring Quilts to those with appliqué  to whatever Quiltworx pattern or kit you have lingering on your shelf – I’ll help you get going! \nRegistration fee is all inclusive and includes the following: \n\nSewing Room Facility from Tuesday noon to Saturday at 2:00 PM\n4 nights dormitory style lodging (2 or 3 to a room max)\n10 meals (breakfasts\, lunches\, and dinners – 1 night dinner on your own)\nInstructional support from your arrival to your departure – Quiltworx technique demonstrations and lessons throughout the week – including Quiltworx Appliqué Technique!\nQuiltster workshop (3 hours) (for anyone interested! – suggest having your own Quiltster Account)\nTrunk Show featuring Quiltworx Quilts\nTexas Quilt Museum Tour\nQuilt shop on site (and coupons for other shops nearby)\nSnacks\, door prizes and so much more!\nAirport shuttle service can be provided!\nMachine rental — we’ll need to chat — it is possible but we’ll need to make special arrangements.\n\nSpace is limited – so place your deposit to hold your spot now —   and finish paying by the end of August.   Bring a friend and plan to make many more!  October on the edge of Texas Hill Country is beautiful!  Plan to sew (AND LAUGH!) a lot! \nNOTE:  Deposits refundable less 5% processing fee through July 31\, 2023.  You will be invoiced for balance which you can pay in full or over time.  Payment in full due by August 31\, 2023. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Quiltster - Hands On - Zoom Class
DESCRIPTION:If you are a fan of Quiltworx Foundation Paper Pieced Quilts and you haven’t yet explored or mastered Quiltster — here is the perfect opportunity! \nWhat is Quiltster:  Quiltster is a cloud-based\, subscription-based software application a bit like a digital coloring book — but oh\, SO MUCH MORE! \nFrom starting with a standard Quiltworx pattern\, you can easily point and click your fabrics and your colors to create the quilt of your imagination!  Whether you work the thousands of fabrics in the Fabric Stash — or you upload your own (you’ll learn how!) — it’s easy to shop your local shop\, your favorite online shop or your own stash to create your quilt.  Once you have pointed and clicked your way to “perfection” — you can then print out the necessary information to shop your fabrics (yardage requirements)\, organize your fabrics (cut and label your strips) and then group them by sewing unit so you can grab those Template Layout Sheets and get going! \nWant to step into the wild side?  We will also look at how you can easily create RAINBOW quilts or even use Quiltworx Strip Sets to design  your quilts! \nFeeling Super Creative?  Then you will want to learn about the MAGIC OF MIXERS!  Create your own “custom” version of a Quiltworx pattern!  With some of the Mixer Variations — you would need to create HUNDREDS OF QUILT PATTERNS before you replicate a design!   How exciting is that! \nSo what are you waiting for — sign up for your own Quiltster account\, register for my Zoom class — and together we’ll learn the Quintessention Joy of Quilt Designing with Quiltworx!!

SUMMARY:Carnival Flower - Zoom Class - Register Now!
DESCRIPTION:We had a great intro class on Jan 21\, but you can still join – Register today\, you can watch the recorded classes and be ready for our next class!\n\nNOTE:  it’s not too late to join us!  While we may have held a class or two — they are fully recorded and the schedule gives you lots of time to “catch up”.  Many students didn’t even receive their fabric kits until late February!  I’m always available for questions…  so if you are on the fence thinking “maybe it’s too late — NOPE!  Join us!   \n*********************************************************************************************************************************************************** \nThe two quilts – Wall (80″ x 80″) and the Queen (99″ x 99″) include all of the techniques that make Quiltworx special!  From their newprint Template Layout Sheets for fabric prep\, to ALL of the sewing foundations — not to mention their detailed and graphics intensive written instructions which make their quilts do-able by everyone — even confident beginners! \nThe Zoom Series (like all of my classes) will be recorded so you will have access to all instruction and teaching support materials for MANY months after the live class sessions conclude.  And you receive my guarantee to be available for questions and support until your quilt top is finished! \nThe first class session will be a general introduction to the pattern and the class series.  It will be my goal to help you understand all of the quilt’s components\, where each of the fabrics go\, how to prepare your papers\, cut and organize your fabrics and much more.  I’ll even provide fabric and bag labels to help you get organized. \nClasses will be on ZOOM live but recordings will be available 24-48 hours after each live session.  And look for the additional technique support videos! \nClass #1 —Introduction session met on Saturday\, January 21 – Recorded for new registrants and review. \nClass #2 –  Saturday\, February 18 from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM (lots of time between #1 and #2 to get organized\, purchase fabrics\, etc!!) \nClass #3 – Saturday\, March 18 from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM \nClass #4 – Saturday\, April 1 from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM (no foolin’ !) \nClass #5 – Saturday\, April 22\, from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM \nClass #6 – Saturday\, May 20 from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM \nClass #7 – Saturday\, June 3 from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM \nClass #8 – Saturday\, July 15 from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM \nI’ve spread things out quite a bit to allow lots of sewing time so that hopefully by the time class ends you will have your quilt nearly completed!  That’s the goal but if it doesn’t work out that way — no problem!  Sew as you can and the videos will be there to support you as needed. \nMy fee will include the pattern — DISCOUNTED approximately 15% off retail!  So if you are purchasing a kit — I suggest you purchase fabric only – so you can save a few $$ on the pattern.  But if you have the pattern — you can purchase just the instruction.  Note:  final pattern prices are higher than anticipated — so those already registered\, you’re good!  But I’ve had to adjust the pricing going forward.  Sorry for the confusion. \nDeposits are refundable up through December 15\, 2022.  Payment in full is due by January 10th (and must be received before your pattern will be shipped).  I will invoice for balances due in Mid December – I’ll need to know  your pattern size preference.  Patterns will not ship until early 2023 (as soon as I can get them in from Quiltworx!) \n  \nSpecial Notice: \nWe are also offering an in-person retreat in Shipshewana\, Indiana April 25 – April 29  featuring Carnival Flower!  Register  and pay for the Carnival Flower version of the retreat by January 20 and get this zoom class free.   Click here for more  information

SUMMARY:Goodnight Star by Quiltworx - Zoom Class Series
DESCRIPTION:The Goodnight Star layout includes foundation papers to make (24) 16″ quarter lone star blocks for a quilt that finishes at 96″ x 96″. \nIt is a good introduction to Quiltworx patterns as it is basically a one-block quilt — and you’ll learn Judy’s Strip Piecing Technique for Lone Stars — a component in many of her quilts.  In addition\, you’ll learn many other Quiltworx techniques — from using the newsprint papers in  your pattern\, reading her instructions\, organizing and cutting your fabrics to name a few.   Quiltworx Stripsets will work beautifully for this quilt — but for Goodnight Star — each diamond will require one more fabric — suggested is a DARK blender of each colorway from your strip set.  (I have lots of strip sets available — check them out!) \nLooking for a smaller project — the StarBaby pattern is a great option to learn the techniques without the same investment in time\, fabric and money.  You’ll learn almost all of the same techniques — but in a fun baby\, table or wall sized project. \nClasses are taught live but recorded for your convenience.  If Tuesdays aren’t good for you — then watch the recording in the evening or on the weekends.  Either way — I’m available to you from registration through your last stitch – whether it is soon after the class concludes or months (and months) down the road. \nClass dates:  (all live classes begin at 10:00 AM Central Time) \n \nQuiltworx 101 – pre-recorded introduction to Quiltworx Patterns / Projects – on your own \nIntro Session: –  January 10 – learn all about the project(s) — from the pattern details\, papers and fabrics required. \nPrep & Fabric Cutting Session — pre-recorded so you can access as you are preparing your papers and fabrics \nSession #2:  January 24 — we will orgainze our Lone Star Fabrics and then start Phase 1 of the sewing of these \nSession #3:  February 14 — Phase 2 of the Lone Star Diamond Blocks — putting your Diamond Strip Sets back together again \nSession #4:  February 28 —  Assemblying your quilt top! \nThis quilt goes together so quickly you’ll want to make 2!  For those doing StarBaby — You’ll attend the same sessions — but will have much less sewing between classes.  Once you have learned this technique — dozens of Quiltworx quilt patterns are ready and waiting for you including:  Zen Garden\, Prismatic Star\, Rainbow Crystal\, Tattered Star\, Sparkle and many more!  And this is a fundamental component of many other quilts.  So join me and put another Quiltworx Technique in your Quilting Tool Box! \n

SUMMARY:Quiltster - Zoom Class
DESCRIPTION:Do you love making Quiltworx quilts — but are overwhelmed at the thought of designing your own?  Getting a headache trying to imagine how it might look if you swap this color or that color and then understanding how to integrate your choices with your pattern?  Calculating how much fabric to buy!  It’s totally overwhelming!!! \nLet’s change that!\nJoin me in this 3 hour Zoom Class where you will learn how to choose your pattern\, add your own fabrics or choose from Judy’s palettes\, place your colors into your quilt\, print the necessary documentation or even use the Marketplace to buy your fabrics and design YOUR quilt!  QUILTSTER is an amazing tool and you’ll have fun designing your quilts and realizing how easy it can be to point-and-click your way to your own personal Quiltworx Quilt!  From standard Quiltworx patterns to creating your own MIXER — you’ll be ready to play (and play and play some more) on Quiltster.  You do NOT need to be a highly-skilled computer user — the software is very user friendly and you’ll be a pro in no time at all. \nYou can join the class and just watch — but I strongly encourage you to register for Quiltster for yourself  so you can work in your own account.  Sign up for just 1 month to get you started and to be able to follow along in class “hands on…”  – the best way to learn.  You can choose to continue your subscription having fun playing with Quiltster Color and Quilt design.  Love it?  You can save money by purchasing their annual subscription  ( Note: to have access to the cloud-based Quiltster program\, you need to subscribe directly with Quiltworx / Quiltster.   Again it’s a month to month subscription\, you can drop any time\,  with a discount for a year long subscription.  https://www.quiltster.com/subscribe ) \nQuiltster is cloud based and you can participate on your computer\, tablet or smart phone.  For class\, you may want to consider using 2 devices — one for Zoom to see what I’m doing and hear what I’m saying — and the larger screened device with Quiltster so you can work at full screen capacity.  If you are using a computer — you may want a good old-fashioned mouse to make placing your fabrics a little easier — not necessary – but helpful.  Chrome is the preferred browser — so if you are on a tablet with Safari as your sole browser — you may want to install Chrome.  It is free. \nWant to learn more?  We offered this class previously and it received rave reviews.  Learn how to work from your stash\, design your own unique Mixers\, create “rainbow” quilts and so much more!!
